Could've sworn I'd already written a post on this..

.. maybe it got the <snip> treatment in its entirety.

In any case, I've written a program to solve this and, unless I've got some of the premises wrong, it doesn't give a useful answer.

I'm assuming:
- Golems in a row, not a circle
- No race condition issues - decisions made simultaneously across golems, before any movements are then made
- Above head means vertically above, not at 135 degrees
- A 'vertical' arm is at vertical and above (180 deg), not vertical by the side (0 deg)
- More than one rule can apply to a given golem at any given timestep

I end up with the second golem stuck in a permanent cycle, which is a bit distressing. Going to try changing some of my assumptions now, but any hints/clues as to what I'm doing wrong would be welcome.

Good old post and solve. Suffice it to say that my premises were not all correct.

Neat puzzle, in the end.

Well done! How much do you want for the source code? ;)

I actually used PHP for the carrot string puzzle. No idea where I'd begin with this one!

I made little men out of cutlery and moved them around - it only took around 30 minutes to do the alrogithm this way. Call me simple.

Talis - just the mental image of a distressed golem with limbs stuck in an infinite loop - hahahaha

You have the patience of a saint! My matchstick men have been thrown across the floor several times this week.

I also was convinced it was wrong until I stood a bit further away - like they were on the floor and I stood on the couch.

If only I'd though of matchsticks though... cutlery was a bit large :-)

And whether vertical means vertically up, or vertically down as well.

It's all very literal. If it's vertical, it's vertical. Likewise for the above the head thing.
