Start by trying to work out which squares must contain the ends of the string. Once you know where the ends go, you know none of the others can be a dead end...

Plot a path through the grid moving one space at a time, horizontally or vertically, filling in the letters as you go. Does that make it clearer?

I ended up treating the puzzle as a series of anagrams - I looked for words that could be made from the letters and went on from there.

Being something of an inquisitive so and so I read ahead to the discussions on a future, similar problem. Given that the hint for the next one seems to be 'approved' by another member, how good an example is the example for this one?

Edit - OK, got it now. (fx= sound of head hitting wall. Hard.)

Neither. Ignore the word 'fold' and look at the example.

Please help...I just do not get it! I have made my trail successfully, I am armed with the letters from the coloured boxes but I cannot find an anagram of all of them. What have I done wrong?

There's no need to anagram. If you have the correct path, put the letters in the grid and you'll see a message...
